How does Multiplayer work?

A player who wants to host needs to start the game in multiplayer mode. The host can have up to 5 people visit, for a total of 6 players on the island. Visiting players need to choose a character to visit the island with. Your character will take their inventory into other peoples games and can take items back home once the session has ended.

You can do anything you can do in single player except only the host can move buildings, place buildings, activate the Deep Mines elevator with everyone inside, and sell farm animals.

The world is active while the host is active. Only the host can place buildings and further the town quests. Other players can build relationships with the townsfolk and receive requests from them. The money earned is not pooled but other players can contribute to paying off the town debt if they choose.
